Libertango by Piazzola with NZSO

Astor Piazzola is one of Argentina’s most iconic Tango composers. He was a virtuoso Bandoneon player and arranger. Many guitarists play Piazzola’s music which has mostly been arranged for guitar. Some of his most famous works include Libertango, his Four Seasons, Oblivion and History of Tango.

I was asked last year to perform at a winery in New Zealand called Craggy Range and I know that the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra would also have a group performing. I contacted the NZSO and asked them if they would like to collaborate. I sent them the score to Libertango which I had arranged for guitar and strings. We had a short rehearsal in the morning and performed the piece alongside Vivaldi’s Concerto in D later that day in a beautiful natural amphitheatre on the Craggy Range property.
